GO GO GO

I ran across an old newspaper the other day. The front page pictured three women from the early 1970’s. These women were the first trained “fire women” in Illinois.

As I am reading the interview with these women I am appalled by the questions.

“What will you do if you have a cake in the oven and there is a fire? Or say you are under the dryer at your hair salon?”

The stigma that was put on these women really got to me. But then it hit me this was the life these women led. They baked cakes, vacuumed the house, and got their hair done.

It seems today that mothers fight that stigma very hard. Women today have what I like to call the “look at me syndrome.”

Look at me I can go to school, work, clean the house, bake the cake, hug the children, love the husband, and I am in heels!!

It is true that mothers can do it all. We can have the career and the family and the house. In order to do so we have to stretch ourselves pretty thin. This can be extremely tiring as well as rewarding.

I am asking each of you to sit down and look at all the things you do. I think we forget to give ourselves credit for what we have become. We do much more than bake cakes and sit under the hair dryer, and for that pat yourself on the back. Put your feet up and have a glass of wine, because sometimes the world moves to fast and you have to take a break, slow down, and look around.

You are all doing a wonderful job. From one mother to another. : )
