grab life and go

By Cassie

I have lived in Illinois since I was ten years old. This week I went sledding for the first time ever. I know you guys are thinking how has she never been sledding? I was deprived as a child I suppose but this was in fact my first time. I decided it was necessary to give Aiden this experience. Since I knew nothing about sledding I trusted my friend’s judgment when he informed me that we were going sledding at Bakers park. We bundled up bought some sleds and were on our way.

I became a little weary when I saw the sign in front of the park that read

“Sledding is extremely dangerous. Sled at your own risk.”

I gave a look of concern but was assured it was completely safe.

As we walked into the park my stomach turned. I was expecting little bunny hills and these were far from that. These were hills I was frightened of. As I looked down at Aiden’s eyes I knew he wasn’t so sure of sledding anymore. After much coaxing they got me on the hill. Aiden however was a little more weary than me. I could see the fear in his eyes. It was one of those moments where you question your mothering skills. What kind of mother would take their child down this dangerous slope? My friend grabbed him without saying another word and off they went. By the time they hit the bottom of the hill Aiden was laughing so hard he couldn’t stand up. The joy on his face was priceless.

I guess the lesson in this was that sometimes it is ok to take the road less taken. Sometimes you just have to grab life and go. And sometimes it’s those moments that you will never forget.
