Things I Have Done One-Handed Since Having a Baby

By Veronica

My youngest daughter is now five weeks old and, like all babies, she wants to be held all the time. You know how it is. So I am rediscovering the skill of doing things one-handed.

  1. Deboned a chicken.
  2. Mashed potatoes.
  3. Swept the floor.
  4. Typed this post.
  5. Loaded the washing machine.
  6. And the dishwasher.
  7. Scrubbed the skillet.
  8. Brushed my teeth.
  9. Vacuumed the floor.
  10. Buckled seat belts.
  11. Killed a fly.
  12. Paid for pizza.

Now if any of you could teach me how to fold laundry or chop onions, I would be very grateful.

What’s the most difficult thing you ever had to do while holding a baby?

I am totally impressed that you deboned a chicken one-handed. How did you manage that? I think I’ve done most of the other things on your list. I can put away laundry one-handed, but not fold it. I can brush my older girls’ hair one-handed, and even put a barrette in, but no one-handed ponytails. And chopping anything is just impossible with a baby in one hand.

    WOW on the chicken!!!
I packed a house into boxes and crates ready to move from Germany to England one handed..i think thats the biggest one! LOL
And since number 1 of 3 is only 1 year and 13 days older than 2 of 3 i managed for a short while with no hands! LOL and yes we moved house then too..from Wales to Germany!

Ok I think we are all just amazed that you deboned a chicken one-handed. I’ve done everything else on your list, but not that. When I nursed the twins, I had no hands; I had to have Elliot sit at my feet so I could see the page of his storybook, and I would just recite what was on that page since I had them all memorized.

I can’t believe I’m admitting to this, but going to the bathroom in an airplane bathroom and also once when using a squatty potty. If you don’t know what that is, google it. You will be impressed.

i have to agree with the WOW on the deboning chicken! the hardest thing i think i have done with 1 hand is going to the bathroom and giving my 13 month old a bath. Giving a 13 month old a bath while holding a newborn is a task. Are we mommies just amazing lol!

Wow! I’m looking forward to my one-handed days. Coming up fast!

I always cry so much whenever I chop an onion. Sometimes, if I want an onion really fine, I’ll toss it in my food processor for a quick whir. That might be a one-handed task, though you’d still need a knife to chop it into big pieces. Might be too tricky to attempt.

Like your other commenters, I’m very impressed that you DEBONED A CHICKEN onehanded! That skill should really be demonstrated on the Food Network.

The chicken feat is absolutely impressive! I’ve buttoned up my older daughter’s sweaters one-handed. The good old days! They’re coming up again really quickly.

Wow — you deboned a chicken one-handed? Were there teeth involved?

I know! I know! I know! ::Raising hands wildly!::

I have actually folded laundry with one hand . .. while nursing my newborn.

I sit down on the floor while nursing said baby and fold the laundry. How well the laundry gets folded while doing that, well, that is up to you. 🙂

i’ve done a lot of things one handed, but how on earth did you debone a chicken? i’m impressed. that one would have done me in i think.

Wow about the chicken and the other things. From your list I think I’ve only done the teeth brushing thing, but that’s not difficult.

I’m not so skillful with one hand. That’s why I loved babywearing when my son was a baby.

I remember one time when my son was just a baby and I was out grocery shopping for the first time without my husband. My son a course got cranky and he wanted to be held so I push cart while holding him and grocery shoppped while holding a list as well. I do not recommend it especially when you have the cart that wants to lean one way all the time.

I second the going to the bathroom in an airplane comment. I too have done that one handed.

    Also
    cooked dinner,
    changed bedding,
    bathed other children,
cleaned up vomit off the rug (use the dust pan to shovel it up),
    put in contact lenses,
    applied mascara,
    shampooed and conditioned,
    shaved legs,
    used a tampon,
    and sewed a costume.

I have also been known to knit entire sweaters while nursing, and embroider.

Played the piano in church while nursing infant daughter in sling. 🙂

Ditto on deboning the chicken — I can’t even handle that with two hands!

Pampered Chef Food Chopper. Pre-slice them, then you can just toss a few slices in when you need them. And if you make some excited or goofy faces while you’re pounding away with that one hand, it helps.

Ho ho! My dad once freaked right out when he walked into my house and realized that I was:
    a) making soup from scratch
    b) nursing my baby in her sling
    and
    c) talking to a friend on the phone
ALL AT THE SAME TIME. Of course, I can’t remember to ever buy new shampoo, thanks to my now-non-existent memory, but my ability to multi-task is IMPRESSIVE.
