A friend once told me that she taught her 4 year old daughter to put coins into a piggy bank, and at the end of the year before Christmas, they’d bring the piggy bank to a charity. Usually the total was somewhere around $200 (loose change adds up), and her daughter would put dad’s pocket change in the piggy bank each day with a big smile and say “I’m helping people”. I admired the example my friend showing her daughter about finding joy in giving to others.
Photo used by permission from Assisted Senior Living. Now I have a son, and he has a piggy bank. We put all our loose change in it, and in December, when he is two years old, I’m going to take him and his piggy bank to a charity to donate. As a family, we tithe to our church and also donate to foundations and charities that are important to us, but this is not very meaningful to a young child. They aren’t actually participating or seeing the act of giving. For a child to actually give something on their own to something else, and find pleasure in it, is a great way to teach them about charitable giving.
Since my son is almost two, we’ve tried to include him and have him participate in other ways. We give him a dollar to put into the tray when it’s passed at church, and this year we are taking him to Operation Santa at the NYC Main Post Office, where hundreds of thousands of Dear Santa letters are gathered for anonymous good Samaritans to peruse and choose whom they’d like to surprise with a present. I did this for years before getting married, and now that my son is getting older, I plan to start again and bring him along, so together we can have the fun of anonymously surprising a young child.
We are teaching him to share with other children, and another great way to encourage children to give is to ask them to select toys or clothes they’d like to donate. Make a fun event of picking out items in good condition that you can donate to children who would really appreciate it. As children get older they can also choose to put aside money on their own to donate, and as they grow into adulthood the wonderful habit of charitable giving will have become part of their character.
I think this is so SO important. We tithe 10% of our earnings to our church, and it’s been so fun to teach our kids about why we do it and see them really getting it. You also lead by example and when you donate to charity, I think your kids see it and realize it’s important. THanks for the great article.
It’s never too early to start teaching children about giving.
Dear Annie,
I just wanted to say thanks for using my Flickr/Creative Commons photo in your blog post. As it is noted below my photo on Flickr, I require attribution in the form of a link to my site http://www.AssistedSeniorLiving.Net (versus a link back to Flickr) if you use my images. I would really appreciate it if you would make the correction.
Thanks,

FYI, Awesome site.
I am trying to find a good blogging site where I can actually get viewers or readers to view my blog. I have tried blogspot and live journal with no real success. Does anyone know of any good sites where I can actually blog and get readers?. . Another thing is any tips to get readers to your blogs? Should you follow a theme or how do you need to advertise or if you keep posting will they come to you?. . Please no spam. Thanks.
It helps to show a mutual interest in others and be respectful, who can sense this and will want to see what you and your site is about.
For example, you ignored the post here and used the comment section for your own gain- not the appropriate forum or method to seek readers (and it slights the writer of the post).
I’m sure if you have a great blog, over time you will build up a readership, so I suggest working on writing great content and building online relationships.
