Got My Rubber Sandals, Got My Straw Hat

By Megan

Summer’s here, and as anyone who lives in the Midwest (or Northeast, or anywhere winters are frigid and unrelenting and LONG) would be, I am 100% for that. I love the time I get to spend outside with my family these long, beautiful days, and I love the freedom and flexibility in our schedule when we aren’t stapled to the school calendar. I’ll confess though that as my kids get older (why do they insist on that?), the mental shift from school days to summer days takes some time and can be a bit of an adjustment for all of us. The weekday structure that kept us all knowing what comes next for whom has disappeared, and it’s up to me to keep everybody (loosely) in check as these warmer months progress.

These past few weeks I’ve found some great resources for Moms and Dads at some of my favorite blogs. They’re not all geared towards summertime, but they do address one or more of the important and recurring roles and responsibilities of parenting year round (and year in and year out, smile) that may come into play in a bigger way for parents whose children are out of school for the summer, thus at home and under our wings for more hours in the day. I thought I’d share some links with y’all of some of the great posts (and labors of love!) I’ve discovered.

Lora Lynn at Vita Familiae thoughtfully discusses her ideas for Staying Positive When Life is Positively Nuts (I love that title!) in a three part series filled with passionate, pragmatic and spiritual advice for making sure home is a calm, happy, peaceful, stable place for kids and parents even when cheerful chaos is simply a way of life.

Jo-Lynne at Musings of a Housewife’s series on Raising Responsible Kids captured my attention and gave me some awesome ideas for dealing with everything from picky eaters to tantrum-prone toddlers (I happen to have at least one of each right now). She also discusses general discipline, chores, allowance and a handful of other helpful topics.

I’m going to pull out Mary at Owlhaven’s post, 5 Tips for Surviving a Difficult Day a few times this summer, I’m sure. Her advice is always spot on, and her plan for getting a day that has gone nuts back on a sane, happy path starts with prayer and includes baking. Hey, talking to God and eating cookies sounds like a good plan for dealing with just about anything, to me.

Summer is always so fun and fleeting, but that doesn’t mean we won’t have a day or two of MO-OM, I’M BO-ORED! here and there, so I’m bookmarking the “Mom, I’m Bored – Summer Edition of Works for Me Wednesday” hosted by Kristen of We Are That Family for handy reference. Tons of advice and ideas for activities and planning, all designed for those extra-long, extra-together summery days.

Hope you all find some information in these links that makes summer a BREEZE for you and your kids. If you’ve written a parenting tips post around the topic of summer or have some ideas to share on the topic, I’d love to hear from you as well!

If you start these simple tasks now, they will be habits by the time your child is old enough
to do them well. Keeping the family budget beneath management can be challenging for most
people, even those that have large incomes. As an experienced
    conversationalist who has been wielding
verbal words since toddlerhood, you easily move from one group of people to another adjusting your tone, your vocabulary, and your syntax accordingly.
