My Sunday-Go-To-Meetin’ Shirt

By Veronica

Like many mothers on a budget, I don’t spend much money on my appearance. I have four daughters to clothe – and they look so adorable in those clothes – so I would rather buy dresses for them than one for myself. On Sundays, they go to church dressed in childish finery, while I’m happy if my shoes are clean and my shirt matches my pants. (That’s trousers, for you British).

So when I passed a long-sleeved white shirt in the clearance rack for $8, I thought, Hey, white matches everything! and I added it to my cart.

Sunday came around and I dressed the girls in the foofy dresses they prefer and spent the last five minutes scrambling for something for myself. I saw the cheap new shirt on its hanger in my closet, so I detagged it and pulled it on and we all left for church.

It takes a while to get the girls settled in their Sunday School classrooms. Once everyone is where they should be and no one is crying, I usually stop by the bathroom, check my hair, and then go to Fellowship Hall to sit with a cup of coffee. But this Sunday, I checked my reflection in the mirror and something was not right.

My shirt did not look right. Something about it was odd. Something was off. It was – oh my word, it’s a pajama top.

I suppose the satin around the neck should have tipped me off, or perhaps the brand name that included the word “sleepwear,” but I had missed it entirely. In my focus on finding the girls’ tights and dress shoes and so forth, I had not thought past grabbing the first clean thing for me. I don’t even own a full-length mirror.

So there I was in the church bathroom, wearing a pajama top for Sunday worship. It seemed obvious to me now, and I couldn’t see how anyone could miss it. I imagined everyone looking at me and thinking, Veronica didn’t even change out of her pajamas before coming to church? That is a new low, even for her. I considered hiding in the back corner of Fellowship Hall and sneaking out the moment church was over.

Then, in a fashion epiphany in the spirit of BooMama, a voice in my head said, Own it. Stand tall. Walk into that sanctuary with a stride that says, “Yes! I am so confident that this congregation knows the love of Jesus that I can wear my pajamas to church! And I know that you, good people of the kingdom, will not judge me.”

And that is exactly what I did.

And no one said a thing.
