My Reasons

By Veronica

I was going to write a post about Roman Polanski and how angry I am at his defenders. I was going to write a post about how disgusted I am that people still blame children for the crimes committed against them, or excuse their perpetrators if they are rich or talented or charismatic. I was going to write a post about evil and the abuse of power and opportunistic predation and moral delusion. I was going to write that post, and it might have been a good one, but the anger of it all started to crush me. So I am writing this post instead.

This is why I want a world where innocence is protected.

This is why I want a world where vulnerability is met with kindness.

This is why I want a world where the hopes of children are not crushed.

This is why I want a world where girls are allowed the freedom and joy of their dreams.

This is why I want a world where adults are gentle and protective and kind.

I want that world, and when I am overwhelmed with anger, I find comfort in the knowledge that you want it too. Thank you.

Reading this and seeing pics of those precious children helped this coiled up rage at Mr. Polanski and his defenders unwind… quite a bit actually.

    Thank YOU.

Hear! Hear! I, too, have been annoyed (esp at the French minister of culture who said it was the “scary side of america” that would prosecute him).
    LOVE the photos, too, btw.

Thanking for saying something so wrought with anger, darkness, and other nastiness in such a beautiful, simple way. We need to remember what we are protecting if we are to maintain the stamina, courage, and determination to fight the horrors of this world.

I am so with you on the ugliness and wrongheadedness of the way Polanski’s arrest has been talked about; our society has a problem with fame, as well as a problem with taking rape seriously. On the other hand, I think that it’s important for me to remember, when I feel my indignation and anger rising at someone else’s moral failure, that I keep squarely in mind my own failures, how much I have hurt the people I love, and my own need for mercy.

Beautifully put! I dont know much about the case as i have not watched the news in about a week but i am sure of one thing. Anyone who harms a child deserves whatever they get.
